The plant is honored by the native tribes along the Pacific NW coast. Some healers use no other. Where we lived was old tribal land of the Snoqualmie, "People of the valley of the Moon", famed healers. Snoqualmie medicines were traded across America. One name for the plant in their language means "Sacred...there is nothing more sacred". It is impossible to represent the sound using English letters. It includes two deep throaty rattles and a click. All springs are sacred, and this medicinal plant manifests itself from these pure waters, under and over ground. Bears seek it out for its berries. It is at the heart of every wetland in NW rainforests. Its fragrance mingles with the scent of cedar flowing from springs out into the streams and rivers, guiding the salmon people home.
